Vermork Hydroelectric Dam

In Japan, Kido Dam is another instance of this pattern, a Heavy Water production plant within a hydroelectric facility.

The British commando raid on the Vemork heavy water plant in Telemark, Norway, known as Operation Gunnerside, was a daring sabotage mission during World War II. In February 1943, a team of Norwegian commandos, trained by the British, infiltrated the heavily fortified plant to destroy its heavy water production, which was crucial for Nazi Germany’s potential atomic bomb development. The operation was a success, significantly delaying the German nuclear program and highlighting the importance of special operations in wartime.

This was so well known that it resulted in multiple full-length motion pictures.

After the Germans took control of the Norsk Hydro plant in 1940, they expanded the number of electrolytic cells from nine to 18, doubling the plant’s production of heavy water.
